Wednesday Recap: What is “a proud look” and why is it so wrong?

From last week’s men’s class:

Proverbs 6:16 These six things the LORD hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: 17 A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, 18 A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, 19 A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren.

When you look at the list of seven things, numbers two through six (a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, etc) are fairly self explanatory.  The first item “a proud look” and the last, “he who sows discord among brethren”, are not so obvious.  Yet Proverbs says God hates them and that they are an abomination!

Why are a proud look and sowing discord so wrong?

How would you define “a proud look”?

Oh! I’d love to hear that myself!

People that are arrogant and full of them selves usually give off this look You have to see this look in action. People that want their will above God and the will of others.
Ted Bundy as he went to his execution had a proud look. Sometimes Donald Trump has a proud look and Obama.
People in my own family unfortunately have proud, “look what I’ve done” looks.
Proverbs being known as the book of wisdom, I pray for God to give me wisdom to look within myself.

What is a “proud look” is tough to define.

In our class Louis reminded us of someone who did NOT have a proud look – the tax collector in Luke 18 who could not even lift his eyes toward heaven (that speaks to his posture or “look”), but beat his chest and said God be merciful to me a sinner.

Forgive me if I have offended anyone. I won’t comment anymore since I’m not there to hear the sermon or what is said in class.
