4/24 – Do Not Worry About Life

Today’s Text: Luke 12:22-34

Jesus tells us not to worry about material things. This is very similar to His teaching recorded in Matthew 6.

Some of the reasons He gives are : (1) There are more important things in life than food and clothing, (2) worrying itself does no good, (3) an obsession with material things is a misplaced priority, (4) it also shows a lack of faith in our heavenly father who promises us if we seek Him first He will take care of our needs.

Do you see any other reasons?

Jesus concludes with “do not fear little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom”.

How does this assurance (that the Father desires to give us the Kingdom) relate to our tendency to worry about material things?

This man’s request of Jesus was materialistic. It was obvious the man had not been listening seriously to Jesus’ message about the consequences of greed. In this world of materialism we tend to spend our time worrying about how to come up with the money to pay our bills. It’s sometimes difficult to have the faith in Him to supply our needs and to turn our problems over to God.

Meant to say with our present day economy it’s difficult to make the ends meet and to have faith in God that He will supply our needs.

Thanks for bringing that up Connie! It is a challenge to apply Jesus teachings to our “present day economy” and have the kind of “do not worry” faith He teaches!

I love this passage. It is so reassuring to know that God will take care of us. It fills me with joy to know that He takes pleasure in blessing His children! I can’t imagine how wonderful it will be to finally stand before Him and worship with all the saints.

I agree that it can be difficult to not be distracted, to not worry about the things of this life. I think Mark Morgan made a good point in class Wednesday. This life is right before our eyes. It is what we see here and now. We can get too focused on it and temporarily focus less on the goal of heaven. It’s not that we stop believing in God but that we are asking Him for help on what would seem to be the more immediate problems. That can be very difficult to overcome.

It would be great if we could all live comfortable lives here on earth, but I don’t suppose that is guaranteed. We must all regularly give our faith a work out and strengthen it so that we can continue to fully trust God no matter where He might lead our lives.

I will say that I really like the “Life is more” line and all the ideas that follow it. Perhaps that can be a theme for next year? Life Is More! It could be a full year of reminding ourselves to trust in God’s wisdom/plan. A full year of reminding ourselves to not worry about the material things in life but to stay focused on the goal.
