Today’s Reading: Proverbs 20, 21, 22

Highlights:  Again, several topics here. Wine, a contentious wife, raising children, attitudes toward the poor, etc.

The Proverbs are very practical. As you read through any chapter in Proverbs it is likely that you will see a teaching about something that is going on in your life at that time.

Nothing tests us in more ways than what Jackson Browne called “the happy idiot’s struggle for the legal tender”. What are some of the lessons taught about integrity in business and work ethics?  (For examples see 20:4, 20:10, 20:13, 20:17, 20:21, 20:23, 21:5-6, 22:13).

20:24- A person’s steps are directed by the Lord. How then can anyone understand their own way?/ The older I get the more I see the reality of this proverb. When I was younger I felt like I could change anything or control my own destiny. Now I understand that all you can do is plan and be ready for whatever comes your way.

These proverbs emphasize that diligence, hard work and skill while dealing honestly and upright with others are important to success. Sometimes in today’s world it is considered shrewd to pull something over someone else in a business transaction. Perhaps it was true also in Solomon’s time.
